Propolis
Propolis, which has antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, is a sticky, greenish-brown product used to seal small cracks and gaps in the beehive.
In ancient cultures, propolis (or bee resin) was often used for abscesses and minor wounds. Bees use it as a precautionary measure to seal gaps in their hives and keep out dangerous microbes and fungi. Recent findings have confirmed its potent effectiveness against many harmful pathogens and provide tremendous healing benefits.
Effective against infection
Researchers tested propolis against a variety of dangerous microbes, and the results showed that propolis is potent against aggressive bacteria. While the potency of propolis varies by geography, its protective benefits are consistently present. This may be due to propolis' broad spectrum of flavonoids.
Natural antibiotics
Antibiotic resistance is a growing medical problem, often due to the overuse of antibiotics. People taking antibiotics are often advised to take probiotics to help maintain good bacteria in the gut. Researchers have determined that propolis offers powerful antibiotic properties. Isolated acids from propolis have been shown to be effective against many bacteria, including staph.
Minor burns
One study tested Brazilian propolis against a common burn cream used to help with burns. The results found that propolis was equally effective and more soothing for minor burns than conventional medications.
Ear infections
Middle ear infections affect millions of children and even adults each year. They can sometimes even lead to temporary hearing loss. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester, a compound found in propolis, has been shown to be effective in relieving inner ear infections. Supports the immune system: Candida albicans, a fungus characterized by yeast overgrowth, commonly affects the genital and oral areas. Researchers have continuously analyzed propolis in their search for a suitable and effective solution. Results have shown that propolis can inhibit the growth of Candida and has the potential to stimulate a healthy immune response against the spread of Candida. Nail Infections: Laboratory tests examining the use of propolis against fungal nail infections have concluded that propolis offers greater protection than a popularly prescribed medication.
Blood sugar
Diabetes is a disease that affects millions of adults and children. Studies have shown that propolis can inhibit enzymes that increase blood sugar. Antioxidant compounds in propolis are believed to be responsible for its blood sugar-stabilizing benefits.
